    Hellenic Bank Group makes 16% profit in first half of 2005

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The Hellenic Bank Groups profit for the first six months of 2005 reached 15.6 million Cyprus pounds, an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year (one Cyprus pound = two US dollars).

    Hellenic Bank Group Chairman Andreas Panagiotou described profits as very satisfactory.

    Cyprus protests to UN over T/C leader's statements

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) - Cyprus has sent a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, protesting statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and prospects to solve the issue.

    In a letter that was circulated yesterday as a UN document, charge daffaires of the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the UN Andreas Hadjichrysanthou referred to the statements made by Talat earlier this month, by which he proposed the opening of ports and airports in the Turkish occupied areas in exchange for the return of Varosha.

    Finance Minister resigns

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- Finance Minister Makis Keravnos resigned his post today.

    President Tassos Papadopoulos has accepted his resignation.

    Keravnos has accepted an offer from the Hellenic Bank for the post of Senior Executive Director.

    Minister of Communications and Works Haris Thrassou will be acting Finance Minister.

    Finance Minister resigns to take on senior post at Hellenic Bank

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- Cypriot Finance Minister Makis Keravnos submitted today his resignation to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, who has accepted it.

    Keravnos left his post, having accepted an offer from the Hellenic Bank for the post of Senior Executive Director. Minister of Communications and Works Haris Thrassou will be acting Finance Minister.

    Greek Investigating Commission on Air Accidents begins work here

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- Greek Investigating Commission on Air Accidents, headed by Akrivos Tsolakis, began today its investigations on the island regarding the causes that led earlier this month to the air crash of an Helios Airways Boeing 737, that killed all 121 people on board, most of them Cypriots.

    The delegation of the Greek Commission was received today by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and met Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou.
