[01] Excavation findings to enhance understanding of Nicosia1110:CYPPRESS:01Excavation findings to enhance understanding of Nicosia Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) - This season's excavations at the Hill of Ayios Georgios in Nicosia confirmed the findings of previous seasons of excavations from 1996 to the present, affording a better understanding of the settlement plan, its organisation and importance over the chronological periods it spanned. The study of the huge amounts of pottery, stone tools, the coins and metal objects, the limestone and terracotta figurines and other cult material and the large amounts of slag and other by products of the workshop activities will add much more information to the existing data and enhance understanding of the historical development of Nicosia. In a press release, the Department of Antiquities announced the completion of this year's excavations at the Hill of Ayios Georgios, which started on March 21st and lasted until the end of June 2005, under the direction of Dr. Despo Pilides, Archaeological Officer A at the Department of Antiquities. [02] Cyprus remembers Makarios III1215:CYPPRESS:02Cyprus remembers Makarios III Nicosia, Jul 31 (CNA) - Memorial services were held in all churches across the government-controlled areas of the Republic for Cyprus' first President, Archbishop Makarios III, who died on August 3, 1977. The official memorial was held at Kykkos Monastery, in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, leaders or representatives of political parties, Greece's Ambassador to Cyprus Demetris Rallis, and other officials. Speaking at the memorial, former Minister of Education Christoforos Christofides referred to the struggles of Makarios III until the end of his life for Cyprus and its future, as well as current efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. After the memorial, a sanctum was held at the tomb of Makarios III at Throni, followed by the laying of wreaths. A political memorial was also held today in Athienou, during which Minister of Labour Christos Taliadoros said ''we should keep in mind'' the struggles of Makarios III and join President Papadopoulos in the struggle to reach a Cyprus settlement. ''Our accession to the EU, which was always Makarios' vision, opens new hope and prospects for our country and its people. The prospect of a peaceful and just settlement of the Cyprus problem, through continuous negotiations under the auspices of the UN Secretary General, is the only safe course, which Makarios first plotted,'' Taliadoros added.
