    Cyprus President: Turkey cannot escape from signing protocol

    Paphos, Jul 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stated today that Turkey has no chance to escape from signing the protocol extending its customs union agreement with the ten new EU member states, including Cyprus.

    Invited to comment on reported information that Turkey intends to sign the protocol this weekend, President Papadopoulos said he repeatedly hears rumours that Turkey will sign the protocol.

    US Congresspersons demand end of Turkish occupation of Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) -- A bipartisan group of members of Congress, led by Michael Bilirakis, Co-chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, addressing the US House of Representatives, highlighted the continuing plight of Cyprus as they marked the 31st anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus northern third.

    In his speech, Bilirakis voiced intense objection to the illegal occupation of Cyprus by Turkish troops and declared his grave concern for the future of the island.
