Cyprus honours those killed in 1974 defending Republic

Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus remembers and pays tribute today to all those who lost their life in defence of the Republic during the 1974 military coup against the democratically elected President of Cyprus.

The military coup against the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, was followed five days later by the Turkish invasion, which resulted in the occupation of 37 percent of the Republic's territory and its de facto division.

The wailing of sirens was heard at 08:20 local time, the very time when the coup occurred.

A church service for those killed during the coup was held this morning at Saints Constantinos and Eleni Church in Nicosia, in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, National Guard Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Athanasios Nikolodemos, Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Demetris Rallis, Ministers, leaders or representatives of political parties, other officials and relatives of those killed in defence of the Republic during the military coup. Minister of Defence Kyriakos Mavronicolas addressed the ceremony.

President Papadopoulos and other officials laid wreaths at the tombs of those killed defending the Republic.

Cyprus' House denounces coup and invasion

Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus' House of Representatives denounced today the July 15, 1974, military coup against the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, and the Turkish invasion that followed five days later resulting in the occupation of the island's northern third.

The 56-member parliament held an extraordinary plenary session on the occasion, attended by President Tassos Papadopoulos, Cabinet members, the Undersecretary to the President, the Government Spokesman, other government officials, and the National Guard Commander.

The House observed a one-minute silence in memory of those killed defending democracy and the country.

Addressing the plenary, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias assured that efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and reunite the island would not cease and that the division would never be a settlement option.

He added that ''the message deriving from the traumatic historical reality we lived and still live is that the political management of situations and developments needs caution and maturity, insistence on principles, and readiness for compromises, in order to reach the aim of solving the Cyprus problem.''

AKEL's Parliamentary Spokesman Nicos Katsourides said that only with a realistic discussion of the Cyprus problem, aiming at serving the interests of the people of Cyprus and not those of the US, Britain and Turkey, would a reunification solution be achieved, which is the only true memorial for the thousands of Cypriots who fought and sacrificed themselves for a truly free Cyprus.

He added that ''the fighters of resistance strode towards the painful duty to stand up against superior military powers, to save everyone's honour and esteem,'' noting that ''we owe the heroes an apology, because we did not do everything humanly possible so that their sacrifice would pass as a maximal lesson to the younger generations.''

Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades said that as long as time passes unexploited, as long as the UN are disinclined to undertake an initiative and registers a widening gap in opinions, as long as Turkey's European prospects are worsening and Europe's priorities are changing, so the prospect of a comprehensive and viable solution of the Cyprus problem becomes more distant.

Anastasiades said his party would continue to work towards a reunification solution, which would meet the concerns of the Greek Cypriots, safeguard the common European course for all the inhabitants of the island, and establish a future of security, peace, economic growth and social welfare for all the people of Cyprus.

Democratic Party Acting President Nicos Kleanthous said ''we affirm once again that with strength and determination, caution, continuity regarding the principles and aims of our struggle, and with rationalism and realism we will continue efforts to reverse the consequences of the twin crime'' of the coup and invasion.

He added that ''we demand the determination of the fate of the missing persons and seek a dignified, honourable, just, functional and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, which will reunite Cyprus and its people.''

Honourary President of the Socialdemocrats Movement EDEK Vassos Lyssarides said that, ''aware of our responsibilities, mistakes and omissions, we must launch a new course with a specific strategy and form of solution, within the context of our European family, to the benefit of all citizens.

He added that the Turkish Cypriots ''should understand that their real interests are not safeguarded by the patronising policy of Turkey, which for them also is depressing, but with a just solution that will safeguard their rights.''

President of the European Party Demetris Syllouris said Cyprus has always been a meeting point for peoples and civilisations, a bridge of peace and cooperation, and wishes to play this role today as a European Cyprus, which will allow Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to coexist and cooperate in conditions of peace and security.

Syllouris noted that ''this year, more than any other year, we can clearly see that foreign interventions, as then, destructively mark the Republic of Cyprus.''

United Democrats MP Androula Vassiliou said time builds division, adding that ''the new fait accompli will make the solution of the Cyprus problem even more difficult.''

She noted that with the immobility and the deadlock, the danger of the international and European community seeking adaptation to the status quo looms even larger, while the only issue they will discuss regarding the Cyprus problem will be some confidence building measures and the upgrading of the Turkish Cypriots.''

ADIK President Dinos Michaelides deplored the coup and invasion, which ''resulted in an indescribable calamity and an unprecedented tragedy.''

He said that ''after 31 years of violent division Cyprus and the Turkish Attila continues to tread our land, while all those appearing to be guardians of international principles and values, and the international order, turn a blind eye in this case, leaving Turkey to continuously behave lawlessly against Cyprus.''

General Secretary and MP of the Movement of Ecologists Environmentalists George Perdikes said the House is called upon to continue and conclude the study of the ''Cyprus File'', to dismiss the intervention of the US in its legislative work and help the President of the Republic in his efforts for a just a viable solution of the Cyprus problem.

He added that the events of 1974 ''indicate the diachronic role of the US and Britain in the Cyprus problem and their systematic efforts to make Cyprus and its people easy prey,'' adding that from 1958 to 2004, when the Greek Cypriot community rejected the UN proposed plan for a settlement, ''the permanent expression of the aggressive plans of the US and Britain against Cyprus and its people is the preparation of and effort to impose secessionist plans.''

European Democracy President Prodromos Prodromou said there was no better way to honour those who defended democracy and fought for freedom and human rights, than to commit oneself politically that ''we will continue to pursue a true, European solution of the Cyprus problem.''

He noted that ''nothing justifies all the threatening and doubtful of functionality proposals, with which from time to time some parties try to close the Cyprus problem,'' adding that ''nothing beyond military violence and the fait accompli of the national cleansing and occupation justifies the confederal division of Cyprus.''

[05] European Commision issues report on Green Line Regulation

European Commision issues report on Green Line Regulation

Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- The European Commission expresses its concern regarding the illegal crossing of immigrants from the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus via the Green Line to the government controlled areas.

In its report on the implementation of the EU Council Green Line Regulation, that covers the period 1 May 2004 until 30 April 2005, the Commission notes that the Regulation has proven to be a stable legal frame for the daily crossing of thousands of Cypriots as well as for other EU citizens who can move freely within Cyprus.

''This strengthens the links between the two communities on the island and positively affects the development of tourism'', the report states.

About the volume and value of goods crossing the line, it notes that they remain limited. It is estimated that the real value of the products that crossed the line is 818,133 Euros, and adds that there was no trade between the northern part of Cyprus and other EU Member States via the Green Line.
