    Cypriot and British officials discuss shipping issues

    Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- Shipping and port services issues were discussed here Tuesday between Cypriot Communication and Works Minister Haris Thrasou and British Minister of State for Transport Stephen Ladyman durings the latter's short visit to the island.

    According to an official press release issued here, the meeting took place in connection to the assumption by Britain of the EU Presidency (1st July), at the presence of high ranking officials of the two ministries.

    House President expresses Cypriots' hopes from British Presidency

    Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias told new British High Commissioner in Nicosia Peter Millett today that the Cyprus people look to the British EU Presidency to maintain a stance that will not create anti-British feelings.

    Speaking to the press after a meeting with the new High Commissioner, Christofias said that Millett told him that this is also his own goal. The House President added though that ''in diplomacy these statements must be interpreted into political action.''

    Government to make utmost efforts for Turkish Cypriot missing

    Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) - The Cyprus Government has reassured a group of Turkish Cypriots over its firm position that the humanitarian issue of missing persons should be settled far from any political expediency.

    A group of Turkish Cypriot relatives of missing persons passed this morning to the government-controlled areas of the Republic in order to submit a letter of complaint to President Tassos Papadopoulos and Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou, regarding the absence of progress in efforts to solve the humanitarian issue.

    Cyprus government denounces illegal settling of occupied areas

    Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government is continuously making representations to international organisations as regards the ongoing illegal settling of Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said, adding that the number of settlers in the occupied areas has increased.

    Commenting on stories in the Turkish press saying that thousands of Turkish settlers-workers have left the occupied areas, Chrysostomides said that the press refrains from saying that during the past few days 25-30 thousand Turks from mainland Turkey came to the occupied areas and some of them are receiving ''residence permissions.''
