    Cyprus ranks 14th at XV Meditteranean Games

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus ranked 14th at XV Meditteranean Games which took place in Almeria, Spain, between June 24 - July 3.

    Cyprus has secured one gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

    Kyriacos Ioannou won the gold medal in men's high jump event, with a 2.24 m. jump

    Ioannis Constantinou won a silver medal in the same event, with a 2.21 m. jump.

    Ovidiou Bobirand won the silver medal in men's 57 kilos wrestling.

    Herodotos Georgalas clinged the silver medal in men's rings.

    Anna Phitidou won the silver medal in women's pole vault with a 4.25 jump.

    Nassos Roussos and George Achilleos secured bronze medals in weightlifting and skit, respectively.

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesay: 05/07/2005 to 06/07/2005

    Weather: On Tuesday the weather will be mainly fine at first becoming later locally partly cloudy with probability of isolated thundery showers inland and over Troodos mountains. Probability of local mist patches and low towards dawn.

    On Wednesday the weather will be mainly fine with patchy cloud around midday.

    Wind: NW'ly to SW'ly fresh to strong during the day and gentle to moderate during the night.

    State of Sea: Moderate, but locally up to rough during the afternoon.

    Temperature: Maximum temperature 33-35C inland, 31-33C over south and east coast, 27-29C over west coast and 23-25C over Prodromos.

    Minimum temperature 18-20C inland, 20-22C over south and east coast and 14-16C over Prodromos.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 07/07/2005 - 08/07/2005

    The weather will be mainly fine. The temperature will increase gradually.

    Cyprus President signs law ratifying EU Constitutional Treaty

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has signed the law ratifying the EU Constitutional Treaty, approved last week by the Cyprus House of Representatives.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said President Papadopoulos has already sent letters to all EU heads of states and governments and to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, European Parliament President Josep Borrell and EU High Commissioner for Common Foreign Policy and Security Policy Xavier Solana.

    Cyprus and Syria to expand trade relations

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) - Cyprus and Syria aim to expand their existing good political relations in other areas, like trade and investments, taking into consideration that Cyprus is now a full European Union member state.

    Consultations aiming to increase the volume of transactions and trade between both countries were held today in Nicosia between Cypriot Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas and Syrian Minister of Trade Amer Husnei Lutfi, who meet for the second time this year.

    Government says changes to Annan Plan during negotiations

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- Changes to the Cyprus settlement plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will take place during the negotiations on the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today, noting that the Greek Cypriot side's policy regarding the Cyprus problem has not changed.

    Responding to questions on a statement made by President Tassos Papadopoulos that the Annan Plan may provide the basis for a new round of talks, after it has been substantially improved and amended, the Spokesman said that the UN sponsored solution plan is the basis for negotiations as long as the right preparations are made.

    British EU presidency to be impartial, says High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) - Britain, which holds the European Union's rotating Presidency as of July 1, is willing to play every role supporting the United Nations efforts to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem, new British High Commissioner to Cyprus Peter Millett has said, adding that the British Presidency will be impartial.

    Speaking to a press briefing on the British Presidency's priorities, Millett expressed hope that both in the framework of the presidency and with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos' visit to London at the end of the month there will a fresh start in the bilateral relations of the two countries on a positive and constructive basis, adding that this is the purpose of his term as the British High Commissioner to Cyprus.
