UN USG has no wish to be Special Adviser on Cyprus

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Jun 22 (CNA) - UN Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast said he has no expectation or wish to be the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on Cyprus.

Speaking to reporters after briefing the UN Security Council on his recent visit to Nicosia, Athens and Ankara, Sir Kieran said there is a substantial gap between the two parties in Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot side, while mutual confidence is not high, and that UN Chief Kofi Annan ''will maneuver somewhere between those two extremes.''

Asked what the next step was, Sir Kieran said ''the Secretary-General is going to reflect pretty carefully on how he handles the Good Offices.''
