Cyprus President: Prendergast to see if conditions for new initiative exist

Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said here Friday UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast will arrive on the island on May 30, to explore whether the necessary conditions exist for the UN Secretary General to decide if he will embark on a new initiative on the Cyprus question.

Invited to comment on the UN announcement that Prendergast will visit Cyprus, Greece and Turkey for meetings, Papadopoulos said Prendergast ''will stay for two days and will have meetings in Cyprus.''

He noted that Prendergast will continue the meetings held in New York between him and a Cyprus delegation, under Papadopoulos' envoy Tasos Tzionis, which aim at exploring whether the necessary conditions exist for the Secretary General to decide whether he will embark on a new initiative or not.
