    UN meetings concentrate on substance of Cyprus problem

    United Nations, May 18 (CNA) Discussions here Tuesday between a Cypriot delegation, under Presidential envoy Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, and UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast concentrated on the substance of the Cyprus problem.

    A UN Spokesman said after the meeting there was a preliminary exchange of (views on the) substance today (Tuesday), which will be continued Wednesday.

    UN talks unfold in a satisfactory manner, says Cypriot FM

    Larnaca, May 18 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said that the contacts which Presidential envoy Ambassador Tasos Tzionis is holding at UN headquarters are unfolding in a satisfactory manner''.

    Speaking on his return from a visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Iacovou said that we are at the initial investigative stage with an emphasis on procedural matters.

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) The United States has not attempted in any way to sacrifice Cyprus to improve relations with Turkey, US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher said on Tuesday.

    The United States has not in any way tried to sacrifice Cyprus. We tried to help people in the Turkish community, the Turkish Cypriot community and the Greek Cypriot community achieve what they themselves have long pledged themselves to and wanted. And that is a united federal Cyprus, the US diplomat said.

    Cyprus FM assured Israel will not cooperate with occupied north

    Larnaca, May 18 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said he has received assurances from his Israeli counterpart that there is no possibility that Israel would cooperate with the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

    He was also told that Israel does not intend to begin direct flights to and from the occupied areas or visit the port of Famagusta, declared an illegal port of entry into Cyprus.

    Speaking after returning from a visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Iacovou said his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom rejected reports that his government was cooperating with the illegal regime and said that Israel would observe international legality.

    House Speaker cautiously optimistic about talks

    Limassol, May 18 (CNA) Speaker of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias has appeared ''cautiously optimistic'' about the result of consultations in New York between Presidential envoy Tasos Tzionis and UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast.

    Christofias warned however that it would be hard to make any assessment at this stage since negotiations have just begun and their content is confidential.

    Study to determine future role of Customs in the EU

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) The European Commission and EU member states, will undertake a feasibility study in the second half of 2005 to determine the future role of Customs in the EU as both facilitator and regulator of trade.

    The decision was one of the outcomes of the 72nd Meeting of the Directors General of Customs of the EU Member States and Turkey, which took place in the western coastal town of Paphos last week. Turkey did not accept the invitation to attend.

    No transfer of G/C occupied properties to EU individuals or companies

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- Director of Cyprus Land and Surveys Department Andreas Christodoulou has said that officially no transfer took place of Greek Cypriot occupied properties to individuals from EU countries or to companies whose shareholders are EU citizens.

    Christodoulou said that transactions concerning immovable properties at the occupied areas were made only by Greek Cypriots to their children or other relatives and by Turkish Cypriots to their relatives.

    He also said that a small number of Greek Cypriot occupied properties have been sold to Greek Cypriots.
