    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Refugee football club Anorhosis, from the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, have won the Cyprus championship title, one match before the end of the 2004-2005 League season. This is Anorthosis' 12th championship title.

    Moscow, May 9 CNA -- Former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, is one of the six veterans who will be honoured here today by Russian President during the celebrations dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Victory in the 1941 - 1945 for their participation in the World War ии.

    The six veterans to be decorated by President Putin are President of Greece, Karolos Papoulias, President of Albania Alfred Moisiu, President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic, former monarch of Romania, King Mihai I, Former President General of Poland Wohciech Jaruzelski and former President of the Cyprus Republic Glafcos Clerides.

    Cyprus honours WW II dead, veterans

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- As world leaders commemorate today in Moscow VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking 60 years since the end of World War II in Europe, war veterans in Cyprus held a somber gathering to pay tribute to the millions of people who were killed during the six year war.

    Some 30,000 Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, joined the British regiment (at the time the country was a British colony) to fight against fascism, 2,500 were arrested, about 600 killed and buried in 49 cemeteries in 18 countries.

    Addressing surviving war veterans on Sunday, House President and Acting President of the Republic Demetris Christofias said victory against fascism was the result of a very harsh and bloody battle which left 55 million people dead, 27 m. killed in the battlefield and millions of injured and crippled with massive destruction.

    Moscow, May 9 (CNA) -- A total of 56 Heads of state, governments and international organisations take part in the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of Victory in Moscow.

    Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides are also here. They were welcomed this morning at the opening of the main events marking the end of WW II by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    Cyprus to host EU - Turkey meeting of customs directors

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host the 72nd Meeting of the Directors General for Customs of European Union member states and Turkey, from 12-13 May, in Pafos, on the western coast, to discuss the future role of customs services within the EU.

    Special invitations have also been extended to the heads of Customs from Bulgaria and Romania, in recognition of the signing of the Accession Treaty by their governments on 25th April last.

    Weather: Mainly fine with patchy cloud around midday. Probability of mist patches and low cloud towards dawn.

    Wind: SE'ly to NW'ly gentle to moderate during the day NW'ly to NE'ly during the night

    State of Sea: Slight during the day becoming smooth to slight overnight.

    Temperature: Maximum temperature 28-30C inland, 26-28C over south coasts, 22-24C over west coasts and 19-21C over Prodromos. Minimum temperature 12-14C inland, 14-16C over coast and 8-10C over Prodromos.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 11/05/2005 - 12/05/2005

    The weather will be mainly fine with local cloud in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to rise.

    Application of EU rules beneficial to Cyprus, says Minister

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Implementation of European Union rules and regulations has had an immediate and direct impact on Cyprus and brought benefits to Cypriot citizens, Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou has said, adding that a year after accession e-communications has been liberalised, so has air transport to and from Europe and legislation governing merchant shipping has been modernised.

    In an interview with CNA to mark one year since the Republic along with another nine countries joined the Union, he said a study on the road network management system has been completed and efforts are underway to review the regulations governing the operation of the Telecommunications Authority and upgrade postal services.

    The Minister said he expects Turkey to end its blockage of Cyprus-flagged ships, to see the Cyprus flag be removed from the black list and to have the EU endorse funding of specific projects.

    Cyprus question, Croatia's EU application on agenda of meetings

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias and Deputy Foreign Minister of Croatia Hido Biscevic discussed here today efforts to find a negotiated settlement in the question of Cyprus and Croatia's bid to join the European Union.

    Christofias, who is also Acting President of the Republic, said the Greek Cypriot side is ready to reach agreement which would lead to the reunification of the island and would secure the interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and would not take any rights away from the Turkish Cypriot community.

    Van der Meer says more active role for Commission in Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) - The European Commission remains ready to actively support all efforts towards a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem and to play a more active role in this respect, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus Adriaan van der Meer says in a written statement on the occasion of the 55th Shuman Day celebrations.

    ''The Commission hopes that a compromise will allow the rapid adoption of its proposals on both the financial assistance and on special conditions for trade for the Turkish Cypriot community,'' he adds.
