[01] FM Permanent Secretary outlines positions on resumption of talks2040:CYPPRESS:11FM Permanent Secretary outlines positions on resumption of talks Nicosia, May 6 (CNA) -- Finnish parliamentarians members of the Cyprus-Finland friendship group, visiting Cyprus, met here today with Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Ambassador Sotos Zakheos as part of their contacts on the island. Zakheos explained to them why the Greek Cypriots rejected in a referendum last year a UN-proposed solution plan and outlined the government positions regarding the resumption of negotiations. He also raised the issue of the exploitation of Greek Cypriot property in Turkish occupied north and asked Helsinki not to allow such policies to prevail, pointing out that this would affect efforts for a political settlement. Thanks were extended to Finland for the presence of the Finnish contingent part of the UN peace-keeping force. The Finnish delegation, comprising the president of the friendship group Marjukka Karttunen and two other parliamentarians, discussed further development of economic ties and tourism. Papadopoulos said he looks forward to a meeting soon with Blair, who has extended an invitation to the Cypriot President to visit Britain. [03] Rule of law-community law very important, says Papadopoulos2155:CYPPRESS:13Rule of law-community law very important, says Papadopoulos Nicosia, May 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus is bound by the legal order of the European Union, adheres to the rule of law and respects and implements rulings of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) as well as the European Court of Human Rights, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos told the president of the ECJ and a Court delegation, currently visiting the island. In his speech this evening at a dinner he hosted in their honour, he said he prefers to place the destiny of the nation in the hands and judgment of the Court who are free from political and national expediencies and said he envisages the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of the principles of freedom, democracy, equality, security, welfare and the rule of law, on which the EU is based. In his speech, the President of the Court Vasilios Skouris said the work of the Court is collective and its decisions are the product of ideas on equal participation of all legal systems of member states.
