Prague, Apr 18 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said today he hoped that with the new leadership in the Turkish occupied north of the island, the circumstances will be created for a new round of talks that will lead to the reunification of the island.

He was speaking after a meeting with Pragues Mayor Pavel Bem in the Czech capital, where he is paying an official visit, heading a delegation.

I hope that with the new leadership in the north emerging from the Turkish Cypriot side, the circumstances will be created so that the UN prepare a new round of talks leading to true reunification, President Papadopoulos said.

Cyprus Speaker:hard for TC politician to divert from Ankara policy

Larnaca, Apr 18 (CNA) House President Demetris Christofias believes that it is hard for any leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to be totally detached from the positions and the influence of Ankara, given the circumstances that prevail in Turkish occupied Cyprus.

Speaking on his way to Athens to take part in a conference organised by the Economist, Christofias said the Greek Cypriot side must look at the positive side of Sundays poll in the occupied areas, the fact that there is a change in the Turkish Cypriot leadership.

Commenting on the result of the vote, he welcomed Mehmet Ali Talat's victory and said he had already congratulated him, expressing hope that Talat will follow a policy guided by visions of the Left.

Papadopoulos: we want a solution leading to reunification

    by Athena Arsalidou

Prague, Apr 18 (CNA) --- The main aim of the Republic of Cyprus is the solution of the Cyprus problem that would lead to the real reunification of the island, in terms of geography, society, economy and institutions, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed here tonight at the state banquet hosted in his honor by President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus.

President Papadopoulos, in Prague on an official visit, also underlined that Turkey has to sign and put into force the Protocol Extending its Customs Union with all new European Union member states, including the Republic of Cyprus and noted that this would be a barometer for Turkey's political will to fulfill its obligations towards the EU.

''Turkey has very clear obligations towards the EU and the member states, which should be fulfilled in full. Signing and implementing this Protocol is a barometer for the political will of Turkey to fulfill its obligations towards the EU,'' he stressed.

In his toast at the banquet, the Czech President said he was convinced that ''the EU membership of the Republic of Cyprus on the one hand and the European ambitions of Turkey on the other hand may help the reunification of the island but our own experience tells us that the solution must always come from the inside that is from those who actually live with the problem to be solved.''
