    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 15/04/2005 to 16/04/2005

    Partly cloudy weather on Friday with risk of local showers and thunderstorms, clearing on Saturday morning.

    Winds will be southwesterly to westerly, mostly gentle to moderate breezes 3 to 4BF but with stronger winds on Friday that will reach up to 4BF on Western windward areas. The sea state will range from slight to moderate.

    Maximum temperature will range from around 23C inland and on the south and east coasts to 21C on the west coast and to 13C over the Prodromos area on the mountains. Minimum temperatures will range from 12C inland and on the coast to around 6C over the Prodromos area.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 17/04/2005 to 18/04/2005

    Mostly sunny with a rise in the temperature.

    Sea temperature: 18-19C

    Cypriot President signs book of condolences for Rainier III

    Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos expressed deep sorrow today over the death of Prince of Monaco Rainier III, noting that the deceased had placed Monaco on the world map as an islet of peace and stability in the region.

    After singing the book of condolences, which opened at the Consulate of Monaco in Nicosia, President Papadopoulos expressed the sorrow of the government and people of Cyprus, and his personally, over the death of Prince Rainier III, ''whose administration placed Monaco on the world map again as a notable credit service centre and an islet of peace and stability in this region.''

    The book of condolences was also signed today by House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias and political party leaders, among others.

    EU Commissioner consults with new Cyprus adviser

    Brussels, Apr 14 (CNA) -- European Union Commission responsible for enlargement Olli Rhen met here today with Jaako Blomberg, widely expected to be appointed Commission special adviser on Cyprus, to define Blomberg's mission with regard to Cyprus.

    Sources close to the Commissioner have said that Finland's former Cyprus envoy is to visit the island very soon.

    President Papadopoulos says EU involvement on Cyprus gaining ground

    Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said that the view for a more active EU involvement in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem is gradually gaining ground among EU member states, stressing that it is widely accepted that the Cyprus problem remains under UN auspices.

    Speaking after signing the book of condolences for Prince Rainier of Monaco, President Papadopoulos confirmed that he has received an invitation by British Prime Minister Tony Blair to visit Britain.

    Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) --- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos departs Sunday for Prague where he will pay a four - day official visit at the invitation of his Czech counterpart Vaclav Kaus, April 17 - 20.

    According to the draft programme of his state visit, Cyprus President will also hold separate meetings with Czech Prime Minister Stanislav Gross, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament Lubomir Zaoralek and President of the Senate of the Parliament Premysl Sobotka.

    Limassol, Apr 14 (CNA) -- A Conference on European Basketball entitled ''European basketball - The way forward'' was organized here today by FIBA All Star Day 2005, on the occasion of the ''All Star Day 2005'', one of the biggest basketball events in the world, that will take place this afternoon in Nicosia.

    FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos told CNA that during his meeting Wednesday with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos he expressed his commitment to organised more basketball events in Cyprus.

    Cyprus government welcomes CBM between Greece and Turkey

    Larnaca, Apr 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government welcomes the Confidence Building Measures agreed between Greece and Turkey, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said.

    He also noted that ''we have no interest in seeing any tension'' in the relations of the two countries and especially in the Aegean.

    Speaking at Larnaca airport, before leaving for Luxembourg, to attend an Informal Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Iacovou noted that ''all Confidence Building Measures between Greece and Turkey will contribute to the disescalation'' of the tension in the Aegean, ''to prevent some accidents'' since as he said many of the airplains engaged in airbattles are armed.
