    Cyprus Spokesman: Erdogans statements have no practical value

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said that statements made by Turkeys Prime Minister for a resumption of the peace process on Cyprus have no practical value.

    Invited by journalists on Sunday to comment on statements made by Recep Tayyip Erdogan about a new initiative on Cyprus, Chrysostomides said we are used to statements made by Erdogan which have no practical value.

    Coroner describes T/C's killings as atrocious crime

    Larnaca, Jan 17 (CNA) -- Coroner Panicos Stavrianos has described as an atrocious crime committed by professionals, the killing of three Turkish Cypriots on Saturday, the bodies of whom were found on the Nicosia Larnaca highway.

    The post-mortem examination that lasted more than ten hours on Sunday, showed that the cause of death was head injuries and that the victims had struggled before they were killed.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 18/01/2005 to 19/01/2005 ------- The weather on Tuesday and Wednesday will be showery, with probable thunderstorms. Snowshowers are likely above 4500 ft. The wind will prevail southeast to southwest moderate 3 to 4 bf but strong 4 to 5 in thunderstorms.

    Temperature will range between 8 degrees inland and 10 over the coastal areas while the maximum will range from 14 inland to 16 over the coastal areas. Over the mountains the temperature will range from minus 1 to 3 degrees.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 20/01/2005 to 21/01/2005 ------- The weather on Thursday will be unstable with local showers. The temperature is expected to decrease. On Friday the weather will be mainly fine and the temperature is expected to rise.

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- French Minister for European Affairs Claudie Haignere said efforts have to intensify so as to achieve progress for a Cyprus settlement, noting she can not imagine the island's future within the EU without reunification.

    Larnaca, Jan 17 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Finance Iacovos Keravnos said today that the European Commission believes ''the Cypriot economy is developing in the right direction and in the framework set out by the Convergence Programme,'' adding that ''with the positive developments in our economy, we will join the Exchange Rate Mechanism II the soonest possible.''

    Cyprus says EU conclusions clear on Turkey's obligations

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the December European Council conclusions were clear that Turkey should sign the protocol to extend its customs union with the new EU members, including Cyprus, before October 3rd, when Turkey is to begin accession negotiations.

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) The signing by Turkey of a protocol to extend its customs union with the European Union to include the ten new members is a precondition for Ankara, if it wants to start accession negotiations, French Minister for European Affairs Claudie Haignere has told House President Demetris Christofias, according to reliable sources.

    Unemployed in Cyprus reached 3.6% in 2004, says Minister

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The number of unemployed in Cyprus in 2004 reached 3.6% approximately of the labour active population compared with 3.5% the year before, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros has said.

    Speaking after a meeting of the tripartite National Employment Committee, Taliadoros said that in 2004 unemployment remained at about the same levels as in 2003, despite a higher rate of growth in 2004.

    Famagusta Mayor says building craze goes on in occupied areas

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- Mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta Yiannakis Skordis has said that a building craze is taking place in villages in an area between Famagusta and the northeastern Karpasia peninsula.

    Speaking after a meeting Famagusta Municipal Council had with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Skordis said that ''lately Turkish Cypriots seem to have proceeded with construction at an intensive pace in many areas in the occupied part of the island,'' adding that the Municipality has sent letters on this issue to organizations abroad and to Cypriots living abroad.
