Three Turkish Cypriots murdered, Minister says for 'settling of accounts'

Nicosia, Jan 15 (CNA) -- Three Turkish Cypriots were found murdered on the Nicosia Larnaca motorway this morning with shot wounds on the head, a crime the Cypriot Justice and Public Order Minister described as settling of accounts.

A Police patrol reported that they noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the motorway, near Koshi village in Larnaca district. They found fifty-two year old Elmas Ali Guzelyurtlu in a ditch near the vehicle and his wife Zerrin, aged 50, and his 16-year-old daughter Ayce in the backseat.

The familys 18-year-old son is reported to be living in the Turkish- occupied northern part of the island.

Ali, a banker and businessman in the occupied areas, his wife and daughter moved to the free areas in 2000, following the bank crisis in the occupied areas, Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou told CNA.

Since then, the Cypriot minister added, Ali seems to have been a target, adding that "all his enemies appear to have been from the occupied areas, or the regime or from economic circles in the north.

He noted that it looks as if the murder was carried out for settling of accounts or for vengeance and that it was done by criminal elements from the occupied areas.

Theodoru said that recently, Turkish Cypriot newspaper Volkan reported that Ali "was involved in criminal acts with economic motives".

Cyprus Police Chief Tasos Panagiotou told reporters at the scene that the victims were living in the free areas for he last years.

He said the murder was carried out by gun, which is missing, and that cartridges were found in the area.

Coroner Panicos Stavrianos, who carried out an autopsy at the site, said it was a criminal act. The victims were found wearing pyjamas and jackets.

The bodies were taken to the Larnaca hospital mortuary, where a post mortem examination will be carried out probably tomorrow, while the car was tugged away.
