    Cypriot Foreign Minister exploring ways of cooperation in Beirut

    Beirut, Jan 13 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou arrived in Beirut last night with the aim of revamping bilateral agreements and exploring ways for Cyprus to help towards enhancing Lebanon's relations with the European Union.

    Iacovou said Cyprus' accession to the European Union has provided the capability of helping the whole Middle East region to solve its problems, adding that during his stay in Beirut he would be briefing the Lebanese leadership on the current situation in the Cyprus problem and would augment Lebanon's understanding to the parameters of the problem.

    Beirut, Jan 13 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said today that Cyprus' accession to the European Union creates a number of opportunities both for Cyprus and Lebanon, noting that the government intends to have close cooperation with Beirut in that context.

    Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA)--Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here Wednesday that he considers the 1960 London-Zurich Agreements, which established the Republic of Cyprus, a blessing compared with the forceful division of the country following the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    President Papadopoulos also said that the Greek Cypriots rejected a UN-proposed solution for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem because they could not tolerate the abolition of their state.

    Beirut, Jan 13 (CNA) -- The mutual will to strengthen and broaden relations between Cyprus and Lebanon, especially with the utilization of Cyprus - EU membership and its geographical position, was expressed during meetings Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou had in Beirut with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Prime Minister Omar Karameh.

    According to CNA sources, during his meeting with Iacovou, Lahoud said that with Cyprus accession to the EU, the European borders are on Lebanons doorstep.

    Iacovou expressed to both Lahoud and Karameh the interest of Cyprus in the region and the role it can play in the wider region, noting that Cyprus is a bridge between the EU and the Middle East.

    The Minister told CNA that he conveyed to the Prime Minister and the President of Lebanon the greetings of Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) - Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros said here today social insurance contributions are being paid to almost three thousand Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas.

    He added however that the real number of Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas of the Cyprus Republic is much larger according to unofficial estimates.
