President says vetoing Turkey not good for Cyprus problem
Nicosia, Dec 19 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said his
decision not to veto Turkey's EU bid at the December 16th and 17th
European Council in Brussels was based on the knowledge that it would
not promote the solution of the Cyprus problem but would give Turkey
the guise to continue its policy to consolidate the results of the 1974
invasion and occupation of the island's northern third.
In a statement this morning, President Papadopoulos said he was on the
whole satisfied with the result, noting that ''we made a significant,
positive first step.''
