    Members of US Congress question US policy towards Cyprus

    Washington, Dec 14 (CNA) US members of Congress, in letters to Secretary of State Colin Powell and Homeland Security Tom Ridge, requested an explanation of the visit of Transportation Security Administration officials to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, as well as a reaffirmation of the US existing policy towards Cyprus.

    Strasbourg, Dec 14 (CNA) Dutch Member of the European Parliament Camiel Eurlings has called for Cyprus recognition by Turkey as well as the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from the island and a resumption of the negotiations for a permanent and just settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    British to encourage UN to reengage in new Cyprus initiative

    London, Dec 14 (CNA) The British government will encourage the UN Secretary General to re-engage in a new initiative and will put all its resources and influence behind finding a solution on the basis of the Annan Plan that is acceptable to all sides, pledged Britain's Minister for Europe Denis MacShane.

    He made the statement when asked in Parliament by labour MP Ben Chapman what is his assessment of the prospect for reinstatement of discussions on the Annan Plan for Cyprus.

    Armenian politician calls on Cyprus to withstand threats

    Nicosia, Dec 14 (CNA) - President of the political bureau of Armenian ''Tasnak'' socialist party, Hrand Markarian, has called on Cyprus to maintain a steadfast position regarding the possibility of Turkey commencing EU accession negotiations and not to give in to threats and promises, adding that he expected the Republic of Cyprus to raise with the EU the issue of Turkey recognising the Armenian genocide.
