    Cyprus President: Arafat's death leaves an irreplaceable gap

    Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Yasser Arafats death leaves an irreplaceable gap both for the fighters of Palestine and the course towards peace, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stated.

    The Cypriot President, who has sent a message of condolences to the Palestinian people and Yasser Arafats family over the death of the Palestinian leader, expressing the government and the peoples deep regret at Arafats death, told reporters that it was with great pain we heard about the death of the symbol of the Palestinian resistance and Palestinian people.

    I believe he leaves an irreplaceable gap behind both for the fighters of Palestine and, I would even say, the path towards peace, President Papadopoulos said.

    Mediterranean news agencies seminar opens in Nicosia

    Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that Mediterranean news agencies need to take advantage of multimedia applications and offer new services to their subscribers.

    He was addressing the opening of a two-day training seminar on ''News Agencies Multimedia Services over the Internet'' with the participation of journalists and IT specialists from 13 national news agencies of the Mediterranean region.

    House Speaker & Greek FM decide to intensify efforts on Cyprus problem

    Athens, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias and Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis have agreed to intensify efforts to achieve the best possible result as regards the Cyprus problem.

    Molyviatis told reporters after a meeting in Athens with Christofias that they exchanged views on current issues, which concern Greece and Cyprus. We agreed to intensify efforts in view of the difficult days to come, the Greek FM said.

    Cyprus government expects recognition by Turkey, says Government Spokesman

    Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expects the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey without any reservations, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today.

    The Spokesman noted that in its report on Turkey, that will be discussed at the European Council in December, the European Commission demands from Ankara to sign the protocol extending its Customs Union with the ten new EU member states.

    Cypriot House President: Greece and Cyprus need to intensify their efforts

    Athens, Nov 11 (CNA) Cypriot House President Demetris Christofias has said efforts of Cyprus and Greece should be intensified in view of the European Council in December, which will decide whether a date will be given to Turkey to start accession negotiations, so that the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey is linked with the attribution of a date to Ankara.

    Speaking at a joint press conference with the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Anna Psarouda Benaki, Christofias added that the Greek Cypriot side must declare its readiness to engage at any time in an initiative for a Cyprus settlement and call on the various factors to undertake initiatives.

    Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) --- British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane said that the British government understands the concerns that made Greek Cypriots reject the UN plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, and looks forward to seeing Greek Cypriot proposals on moving the process forward.
