    Cypriot President hopes for Europarliament resolution on Turkey

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the hope that the European Parliament will adopt a proposed resolution calling Turkey to withdraw its occupation troops from the island and recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

    Responding to questions here Tuesday evening President Papadopoulos noted the European Parliament's role in Turkey's European course, adding however that the decisive force is the leaders of the EU member - states, the governments and the European Commission.

    Europarliament adopts MEP's Report on Regulation for T/C

    Strasbourg, Oct 27 (CNA) -- European Parliament Committee of Foreign Affairs has adopted a draft report by Rapporteur Mechtild Rothe on the proposal for a Council regulation on establishing an instrument of financial support for encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community.

    Cypriot MEP Ioannis Kasoulides told CNA that the draft report was adopted after a long discussion and several amendments so as the right of property is respected.

    Cyprus National Council reaches common understanding on further steps

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus' National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue, reached today common understanding with regard to further steps until December 17 when the European Council will meet to decide whether to fix a date for the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said.

    Chrysostomides noted that at today's meeting members of the Council, comprising parliamentary parties, continued to outline their views as regards amendments in the Annan plan (a UN solution plan) and this procedure wrapped up today.

    "The members of the National Council expressed their assessment of the European Commission report on Turkey and submitted their views on moves until the December European Council,'' the spokesman said.

    Responding to questions, the Spokesman said that ''there is broad understanding on the handling of the situation until December.''

    ''The decisions will be finalized by December 17,'' he said, adding that the Council will convene again if this is required.

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) -- The British government welcomes in principle any measure taken by either side in Cyprus with the aim of contributing to a climate of increased trust and confidence between the two communities, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said in a letter to British MP Tom Cox.

    Cypriot MPs to monitor US elections as OSCE observers

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) -- Cypriot MPs Stavros Evagorou and Eleni Theocharous are flying to Washington to participate in a mission of OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Parliamentary Assembly observers which will monitor the US general elections on November 2.

    An official press release said the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly comprises representatives from the parliaments of the Organisation's 16 members states.
