    Cyprus President meets new European Commission President

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos was having talks here today with European Commission President designate Jose Manuel Barroso.

    A red carpet was laid at the Presidential Palace entrance where President Papadopoulos welcomed Barroso.

    The Cypriot delegation at the talks comprises Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Director of the President's Diplomatic Office, Ambassador Tassos Tzionis, and Permanent Representative to the EU, Ambassador Nicolas Emiliou.

    Head of the European Commission in Cyprus Andriaan van der Meer and member of the Transition Team Jonas Condomines Beraud also attend the talks on behalf of the EU.

    After the talks Papadopoulos and Barroso will make statements to the press.

    Cyprus in better position to negotiate settlement

    New York, 15 Oct (CNA) -- In the aftermath of the 24 April referenda having ''avoided the worse'', Cyprus as a full member of the European Union is in a good position, and may be in a better one, to negotiate a fair settlement of the Cyprus problem, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, has stated.

    In a speech at the Hellenic Banker's Annual Charitable Event Mavroyiannis said that it would be a terrible mistake to consider the Annan Plan as the one and only blue print for a settlement in Cyprus or as the only one providing for a federal solution.

    Barroso stresses Commission's role in reaching consensus

    Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- The role of the European Commission is to help to reach a consensus to issues in the EU, Commission President designate Jose Manuel Barroso stated after talks here today with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    President Papadopoulos said they had a sincere discussion, adding that he discussed with Barroso the priorities of the Presidency of the Commission.

    Barroso also said that during the meeting they discussed the perspectives for the EU Turkey negotiations as well as the Cyprus problem.

    London, Oct 15 (CNA) - Every EU country must recognise all other member states, British Minister for Europe Dennis MacShane said, adding that at some stage a question will have to be asked on the recognition of Cyprus by Turkey.
