Cyprus' sovereignty must be respected, Finnish President says

    by Costas Stavrinou

Helsinki, Oct 11 (CNA) -- It is historically a good period for a Cyprus settlement because of the island's EU accession and Turkey's European aspirations Finland's President Tarja Halonen has stated.

Speaking after talks with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos she added that she was expecting a big positive step at last April's referenda on the island when a UN-sponsored solution plan was rejected.

She reiterated Finland's readiness to further evaluate the results of the referendum noting that the main issue now is to respect Cyprus' sovereignty.

Cyprus is an independent state and Finland respects its sovereignty but we also see that your neighbours and the EU would benefit from a Cyprus settlement, said Halonen.

President Papadopoulos said that Finland has always been a friendly country supporting Cyprus, adding that during the meeting with his Finnish counterpart they discussed the Cyprus issue and European matters.
