Cypriot President continues meetings in New York

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Sep 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos will host here today a lunch for the representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to press on with them the need to make moves that will create the appropriate climate for the resumption of the process for a Cyprus settlement.

Papadopoulos and Foreign Minister George Iacovou are in New York and are having a series of meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The Cypriot side appears to be more optimistic now that with the necessary preparation there will be developments in 2005 in the question of Cyprus, according to Greek Cypriot diplomatic sources.

The same sources have said that during yesterday's meeting between Papadopoulos and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the latter did not express disagreement with President Papadopoulos' proposal to create the conditions for the resumption of efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

Today Papadopoulos will meet with US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman, at the request of the American side.

A US source has said Grossman would seek to identify the changes the Greek Cypriot side wants to introduce to a UN solution plan and to understand which moves can be made to give a boost to a new process.
