[04] (K) Government deeply saddened and shocked by death of Patriarch Petros1905:CYPPRESS:04Government deeply saddened and shocked by death of Patriarch Petros Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expressed on Saturday "deepest sorrow and shock" at the tragic death of Cypriot born Patriarch of Alexandria Petros and his entourage, when the helicopter they were on board crashed as it was approaching Mount Athos, in northern Greece. "The President of the Republic and the government express deepest sorrow and shock at the untimely death, in today's accident, of Patriarch Petros of Alexandria and the other clergymen as well as laymen who were accompanying him, among them the Bishop of Mahairas (a monastery in Cyprus) and the crew of the helicopter," a written statement, issued by Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, said. The statement said that the loss of His Beatitude, whose contribution to Hellenism and the Orthodox church as well as to his homeland are well known, leaves a huge gap which will be very difficult to fill.
