    EU rules for Green Line enters into force

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- EU specific rules for the movement of goods across the Green Line, dividing the Cyprus Republic, into the northern Turkish occupied areas and the southern government controlled part, entered into force today.

    According to a press release issued last Friday by the European Commission Representation in Nicosia, the rules provide for trade across the Green Line in wholly obtained goods but also in trade for manufactured goods originating in the northern part of Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 24/8/2004 to 25/8/2004 ------------------------------------------- The weather on Tuesday and Wednesday will be fine.

    Wind will be light catabatic during night time while during day time gentle to moderate sea breezes are expected. The state of sea will be smooth to slight.

    The minimum temperature will range from 18 degrees over the mountains to 21 inland and to 22 over the coastal areas, while the maximum temperature will range from 28 over the mountains to 32 over the coastal areas and to 37 inland.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 26/8/2004 to 27/8/2004 ----------------------------------------------------- The weather is not expected to note any significant change.

    Sea temperature: 27C

    EU calls on traders to seize opportunity for rapprochement

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Eight Turkish Cypriot traders have so far expressed interest in moving their products across the dividing line following the EU specific rules for the movement of goods across the "Green Line", which entered into force today.

    This was stated by the head of the European Commission's Representation in Nicosia, Adriaan van der Meer, who expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the rules, noting that the first eight applications were submitted to the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce which is authorised to issue the relevant documents.

    Cypriot President says Turkey should abide by acquis communautaire

    Larnaca, Aug 23 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here Monday the government does not wish to exercise its right to veto Turkeys efforts to gain a date to commence accession negotiations with the EU in December but wants Turkey to abide by the acquis communautaire.

    Speaking before departing to Athens to attend athletics events and the closing ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games, the Cypriot President said that no one could demand from Cyprus to passively watch a policy, which promotes division on the island.
