T/C politician wishes G/Cs, T/Cs participate together in Olympic Games

Larnaca, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot politician and leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement Mustafa Akinci has expressed the wish Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots participate in the next Olympic Games together under a united Cyprus Republic flag.

Akinci was the first Turkish Cypriot leader to use Larnaca International Airport to travel abroad. He flew to Athens to attend the Olympiac Games opening ceremony Friday night, at the invitation of the Hellenic Telecommunication Organisation (OTE), one of the major sponsors of the Athens Olympic Games.

Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher is paying a private visit to Cyprus, CNA has learned.

Cyprus Deputy Government Spokesman Marios Karoyian told CNA there has been no official information about Boucher's private visit to Cyprus.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Tuesday and Wednesday: 17/8/2004 to 18/8/2004 ---------------------- Mainly fine weather. Patchy cloud in the afternoon, inland and over the mountains, may give slight local showers. In the evening, patchy low cloud and mist will develop, mainly in coastal areas.

Gentle variable breezes in the morning and mainly southwesterly to westerly, moderate to fresh breezes in the afternoon.

At night, mainly northwesterly to northeasterly light to gentle breezes. The state of the sea will be mainly slight, reaching up to moderate in the afternoon on the south coast and becoming smooth to slight late at night and early in the morning.

Maximum temperatures will range around 35C inland, 32C over the south and east coast, 29C over the west coast and 25C over the mountains. Minimum temperatures will range from 20C inland and over the coast to 15C over the mountains.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 19/8/2004 to 20/8/2004 ------------------------------- Mainly fine weather with patchy cloud in the afternoon. Patchy low cloud during the evening and early morning. In inland areas and over the mountains there may be some local showers in the afternoon.

Temperatures will not vary significantly from those on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- People of the occupied town of Morphou asked today Governments of the UN Security Council five permanent members and the EU to exert more pressure upon Turkey to change its attitude and work towards a just solution to the Cyprus problem.
