    USA to continue efforts to ease occupied Cyprus ''isolation''

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) -- The US wants to make sure ''that the people of northern Cyprus do not suffer, or that the costs to them of the failure of the referendum are minimal and that the isolation is eased,'' Adam Ereli, State Department's Deputy Spokesman, has said, adding that this is regarded as ''an ongoing process''.

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the government was informed about the meetings Mehmet Ali Talat, so-called prime minister in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, had in Paris, as well as about statements he made.

    Replying to questions, the Spokesman said Talat had a private lunch with French Minister for European Affairs Claudie Haignere.

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that Turkey has approved and opened air passages in the context of cooperation for Athens 2004 Olympic Games purposes but does not appear to have allowed the use of the air passages by Cypriot registered aircraft.

    Replying to questions, the Spokesman said the air passages have already been put into effect for all air companies apart from the Cypriot ones.

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that yesterday's developments at COREPER on the issue of the economic development of the Turkish occupied areas of the island proves that the legal consolidation of political decisions is necessary in the context of EU activities and that the arguments presented by the Cypriot government are taken into consideration by all EU member states.

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) -- ''I did not come with new initiatives,'' US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Laura Kennedy has said adding that her discussions in Cyprus was a very interesting start.

    Noting once more her disappointment that the Annan Plan failed on the Greek Cypriot side, Kennedy said she was interested in hearing the government's views on the issue.

    ''We have talked a great deal about the central issue of Cyprus in the wake of the failure of the Annan plan in the referendum here. I did not come with new initiatives'', said Kennedy after her meetings with President Tassos Papadopoulos and Foreign Minister George Iacovou.

    Kennedy, State Department's coordinator for Cyprus, was briefed on the Greek Cypriot side's positions about the failure of the Annan Plan for a settlement, said Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

    Iacovou says Cyprus satisfied with COREPER decision

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said that the position held yesterday by the Legal Service of the EU Council during the EU Permanent Representatives meeting in Brussels (COREPER), satisfies the government.

    At the COREPER meeting, a representative of the EU Council's Legal Service said that the regulation adopted by the European Commission on direct trade of the EU countries with the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus entails legal problems, since the Commission's proposal cannot be based on article 133 of the Treaty because the occupied areas of Cyprus can not be deemed as a third country.

    Cyprus and CoE Development Bank sign loan agreement

    Nicosia, Jul 23 (CNA) - The Cypriot government, the Limassol-Amathous Sewerage Board and the Development Bank of the Council of Europe (CoE) signed here today a framework agreement to lend Cyprus 22 million Cyprus pounds to finance the second phase of the Limassol sewerage system.

    The framework agreement was singed by Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos on behalf of the Cypriot government, Limassol-Amathous Sewerage Board President and Limassol Mayor Demetris Kontides and Ruiz Ligero, Vice President the CoE's Development Bank, who is currently visiting the island.

    Nicosia, Jul 23, (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias met here today with US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Laura Kennedy, to whom he analysed the Greek Cypriot side's positions regarding the way ahead in the Cyprus problem.

    ''I had the opportunity to analyse the situation both before and after the April 24 simultaneous referenda on a UN comprehensive settlement plan, as well as our position that the Annan plan as it is cannot be put to referendum once again,'' Christofias said after the meeting.
