Memorials and gatherings to denounce Turkish invasion

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) -- Air-raid sirens wailed early this morning across the government-controlled areas of Cyprus, the same time when thirty years ago Turkish troops invaded the island and occupied 37% of its northern part.

At 0830 local time a memorial service for the army officers and soldiers killed during the invasion took place at Makedonitissa Tomb in Nicosia, in the presence of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and a delegation of the Greek Parliament. Wreaths were laid.

At 1000 the official memorial ceremony will be held at Faneromeni Church, in Nicosia, in the presence of Papadopoulos. Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides will speak at the ceremony.

The Greek government is represented in the events by Minister of National Education and Religion Marietta Yiannakou.

At noon, church bells will toll mournfully and at the same time people will exit their workplaces or homes and stand on the pavements, and traffic will come to a halt in order to make a three-minute silent demonstration against the occupation and in favour of the reunification of the island.

Sirens will wail at the beginning and at the end of this demonstration while the House of Representatives will hold, at the same time, an extraordinary meeting to denounce the Turkish invasion.
