Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- Head of the European Commission representation to Cyprus, Andrian Van der Meer has said Cyprus has one of the highest per capita rates of motor vehicles but also of accidents, and this is one of the reasons why a modern Highway Management System would be beneficial for the island.

Speaking during the presentation of the System, installed by the Public Works Department of the Communications and Works Ministry, Van der Meer said that according to figures just released by the Statistical Service, the number of vehicles sold in Cyprus has more than doubled during the last four years.

He added that ''in the first five months of this year alone, total vehicles registrations have increased by 17,7% compared to last year, whilst the number of private saloons has increased by 26,7% owing, at least partly, to the considerable reduction in prices which the accession of Cyprus to the EU has, indirectly, brought about.''

Public Works Department Executive Engineer and Director of the project Michalis Labrinos said the project was totally funded by the 4th Cyprus - EU Funding Protocol and was conducted by Expert Houses HB Verkehrsconsult GmbH of Germany and Eratosthenis AE of Greece in cooperation with Victor Efthimiades and Neophytos Zavrides from Cyprus.
