No change in US recognition policy, says State Departement spokesman

    by Demetris Apokis

Washington, May 7 (CNA) -- There is no change in the US recognition policy towards Cyprus, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher has said, noting that what the US government discusses is steps to reduce the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot Community.

Answering to a question, during Thursday's daily briefing whether his use for the first time since 1960 of the term ''Greek Cypriot government'' means any change vis-a-vis to the government of the Republic, he said: ''It was a description. There's no change in our recognition policy.''

EU believes Annan plan is viable, head of EC representation says

Íicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- The European Union believes the Annan Plan for a Cyprus solution ''is certainly viable'' and allows the island to effectively participate inside the EU, head of the EC representation in Nicosia Andriaan van der Meer has said.

In a statement on the occasion of the 54th Schuman Day Celebrations on 9 May, Van der Meer notes that the outcome of the Cyprus 24 April referendum allowing a divided Cyprus to join the EU is fully respected but disappointment can not be hided.

Greek Premier says EU solved Cyprus' Turkish-occupied areas issue

    by Christa Nicolaou

Athens, May 7 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said today that the EU has solved the issue of the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, noting that this matter has been settled by the island joining the Union as a whole and giving the occupied areas a special status.

Speaking after talks in Athens with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Karamanlis welcomed and praised the policy of the Republic of Cyprus to financially support the Turkish Cypriots, which was announced right after the April 24 referenda on a UN settlement plan, which the Greek Cypriot community dismissed and the Turkish Cypriot community accepted.

''We must all strengthen this initiative,'' Karamanlis said and reiterated that ''beyond the referenda, for us the aim of the reunification of Cyprus remains concrete, so that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots may enjoy the benefits of the EU.''

Commenting on Turkey's diplomatic efforts to gain recognition of the regime set up illegally in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Karamanlis said ''the EU has solved this issue.''
