    Nicosia, Apr 16 (CNA) -- The US is focusing on persuading both sides in Cyprus that it is in their best interests to vote 'yes' in the referenda to be held on 24 April noting that the Annan plan for a political settlement of the island's longstanding problem ''is the best that's going to come along''.

    New York, Apr 16 (CNA) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair paid a special tribute to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan whose efforts has been the best chance for a generation of progress in Cyprus.

    Speaking after a meeting with Annan, the British Premier said: ''I would like to pay particular tribute to the work he has done in respect of Cyprus, where I believe thanks to his efforts and the efforts of his representatives there has been the best chance that we will have for a generation of progress in Cyprus and that is very much down to him and his personal commitment''.

    Replying, the UN SG thanked the British Prime Minister for his words as well as for the strong support ''we have received from the United Kingdom and also from the European Union''.

    US commits to full and timely implementation of UN plan on Cyprus

    Washington, Apr 16 (CNA) -- The US government is committed to support the full and timely implementation of the UN plan for a Cyprus settlement if approved in separate referenda set for April 24 by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, said Richard Boucher, the State Department spokesman.

    Responding to questions during his daily briefing yesterday, Boucher said the US ''and others, including members of the UN Security Council, are very committed to ensuring full implementation'' of the plan presented by UN chief Kofi Annan on March 31.

    He acknowledged the issue of guaranteeing implementation of the plan was a major concern for Greek Cypriots only a week before the referenda on the island.

    Peter Schieder: Referenda the best moment for reuniting Cyprus

    Strasbourg, Apr 16 (CNA) -- Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Peter Schieder has said the referenda in Cyprus on April 24 were the best moment for reuniting Cyprus and expressed ''extreme'' disappointment that major Greek Cypriot parties were campaigning either against the UN plan for a Cyprus settlement or a postponement of the referenda.

    In a written statement released in Strasbourg today, Schieder said Cyprus was approaching a crucial moment in its history, as Cypriots were invited to vote on the Annan plan in simultaneous referenda on April 24.

    Government calls for responsible attitude

    Nicosia, Apr 16 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has called for calmness and a responsible approach for now and in the months ahead.

    His call came as the people of Cyprus prepare to vote on 24th April in a referendum on a UN proposal for a comprehensive settlement (the Annan plan) and following different positions the Greek Cypriot parties have adopted towards the plan.

    In his press briefing, Chrysostomides expressed the government's appreciation to all the states and organizations that have pledged assistance towards meeting the cost of a settlement.
