European Parliament resolution encourages Cypriots to accept plan

    by Nicos Bellos

Brussels, Apr 14 (CNA) -- The European Parliament believes that Cypriots should accept a UN solution plan for a comprehensive settlement and assures them that any problems that may arise in implementing the agreed solution can be resolved with European Union help.

A motion for a resolution, by a Parliament Committee, warns the people of Cyprus that the choice is between the Annan plan, which goes to a referendum on the island on 24 April, and no solution.

    by Christa Nikolaou

He indicated that Premier Costas Karamanlis would probably announce his position on the Annan plan in the next couple of days at a meeting of the Council of Political Leaders.

European Parliament Committee approves motion for Cyprus resolution

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Brussels, Apr 14 (CNA) -- A motion for a resolution approved by overwhelming majority in Brussels today by the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Parliament, calls on the Cypriots to seize the opportunity to reunify their island peacefully.

The motion, which will be sent to the European Parliament Plenary for adoption, notes that the EU institutions shall do their best to guarantee with other international institutions the implementation of the settlement.

"The European Parliament calls on the Cypriots to be fully responsible, consistent and committed to their status of EU citizens and to seize this historic opportunity to reunify their country in a peaceful way," the motion says.

AKEL urges UN to postpone Cyprus referenda

Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) -- Demetris Christofias, leader of the left-wing AKEL party, renewed today its call for the postponement of the referenda set for April 24 on a UN plan for a Cyprus settlement, so that there could be more time to analyse its provisions to Cypriots and to secure assurances for implementation of the plan, which was presented by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on March 31.

Christofias reiterated the decision by AKEL's central committee that in the opposite case, the party would be ''obliged to not support the approval of the plan'' in the referendum among Greek Cypriots.

UN top envoy on Cyprus: compromise seems ''hard to digest''

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Brussels, Apr 14 (CNA)-- The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto said today that Cypriots are only now beginning to realise that a solution of the Cyprus problem will be a compromise that may be hard to digest but warned that if the solution plan proposed by UN chief Kofi Annan is rejected in April 24 referenda, then one would wonder if there could ever be a settlement.

Addressing a joint meeting of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee and the Delegation of the European Parliament to the Joint Parliamentary Committee with the Republic of Cyprus, that took place in Brussels, de Soto said one of the reasons there has not yet been an agreement is that the people have not come to understand that a settlement could not satisfy their aspirations fully.
