    Cyprus President departs today for Brussels

    Burgenstock, Mar 25 (CNA) --- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos departs today for Brussels where he will represent the Republic of Cyprus at the European Council.

    Papadopoulos, who has been in Burgenstock since Tuesday for the second phase of the UN led Cyprus talks, will be accompanied by Foreign Minister George Iacovou.

    They return to Burgenstock on Friday afternoon.

    Burgenstock, Mar 25 (CNA) -- Switzerland is contributing to the organizing of the talks for Cyprus due to its friendly relations with the Mediterranean island, as well as its tradition as a neutral country, David Vogelsanger from the Swiss Foreign Ministry told CNÁ.

    Nicosia, Mar 25 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 26/03/2004 to 27/03/2004 -------------------- On Friday and Saturday the weather will be mainly fine with a few temporal cloud. Winds will be southeasterly to west, gentle breeze 3BF and in the afternoon at exposed areas, at times up to moderate 4 BF. The sea state will be smooth and slight to exposed areas.

    Temperatures will rise to 22 Celsius in the inland plain, 22 Celsius on the coast and 16 Celsius over the mountains. Minimum temperature will be in the inland plain 9 Celsius, 11 Celsius on the coastal areas and 9 Celsius over the mountains.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 28/3/2004 to 29/3/2004 ------------------------------ Weather Sunday and Monday: The weather will be fine with cloud in the upper atmosphere. The temperature will be increasing gradually.

    UN continue fluid and informal contacts for Cyprus in Burgenstock

    Burgenstock, Mar 25 (CNA) -- The UN are continuing today their informal and fluid telephone and personal contacts with the parties here, in the framework of the talks under their auspices aiming to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem by May 1st so that a reunited Cyprus will join the EU, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN told CNA.

    He said that despite the fact that high ranking officials of the delegations left today for Brussels to attend the European Council, the UN continue their discussions with other members of the delegations.

    ''We continue our contacts in an informal way'', Dujarric said, noting that the fact that there was not photo opportunity yesterday, to mark the beginning of the talks does not mean that discussions are not already underway.

    Brussels, Mar 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos participates in the Spring European Council meeting, which started this evening in Brussels.

    United Nations, Mar 25 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's spokesman Fred Eckhard noted, during his daily press briefing, remarks Kofi Annan's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto made earlier today on the ongoing enlarged talks aimed at a political settlement.

    The talks taking place in Burgenstock, Switzerland, are on schedule and the Secretary Generals Special Adviser Alvaro de Soto spoke to the press there today. He said the setting is in many ways ideal since we have the participants from the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side, Greece and Turkey, now able to interact in a way that is unusual for them,'' Eckhard said.
