    Papadopoulos stresses need for reliable interlocutor

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed the need for a credible interlocutor who would represent the Turkish Cypriot side at this week's enlarged talks, in Burgenstock, Switzerland.

    His comment came before a joint meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in the context of the ongoing UN-led talks. Denktash has repeatedly said in the past few days that he would not be attending the enlarged talks.

    Cyprus and Britain agree on permanent monitoring emissions station

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Britain have agreed to install a permanent station that will monitor electromagnetic emissions in the area of the Akrotiri Salt Lake, on the southern coast, near one of the two military bases London has retained on the island since the country became an independent state in 1960.

    The two governments, following months long talks, also agreed that public health is in no danger from electromagnetic emissions, according to analysis taken in the area, a joint statement said today.

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 23/03/2004 to 24/03/2004 -------------------- On Tuesday, the weather will be fine. Winds will be Notheasterly to Southeasterly moderate 4bf and locally in the afternoon up to fresh 5bf. The sea ste will be slight to moderate.

    Temperatures will rise to 22 Celsius in the inland plain, 20 Celsius on the coast and 16 Celsius over the mountains. At night the winds will be North to Northeasterly 3 to 4 bf and the sea state slight. Minimum temperature at night will be in the range of 8 to 10 Celsius.

    On Wednesday, the weather will be mainly fine with some cloud at times. Winds from the Northeast to Southeast 3 to 4 bf and locally up to 5 bf. Sea state slight to moderate. Temperatures will be slightly higher than Tuseday's.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 25/3/2004 to 26/3/2004 ------------------------------ The weather will be mainly fine with a small drop in the temperatures.

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned today the assassination of Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an Israeli air strike that also caused the death and injury of several people, and called on all parties concerned to exercise restraint.

    European Parliament hopes reconciled Cyprus to join EU

    Athens, Mar 22 (CNA) -- European Parliament President Pat Cox has said the European Parliament would like to see a reconciled Cyprus joining a reconciled European Union.

    Speaking after a meeting today with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, Cox said the European Parliament was glad that discussions concerning the Cyprus problem were held under the UN Secretary General's auspices.
