    Kyrenia ship: The legend goes on

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- The maritime history of Cyprus will come to life again next month, when a full-size replica of an ancient seafarer sets sail from this eastern Mediterranean island carrying copper to Greece, to be used in making the bronze medals for the Athens Olympic Games in August.

    Cyprus has always been a seafaring nation during its 9,000 year old history and its geographical location, at the crossroads of three continents, no doubt has contributed to that.

    CNA observes silence in memory of Madrid blast victims

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- CNA staff participated today in demonstrations to condemn last week's bomb attacks in Madrid.

    At 1300 local time (1100 GMT) CNA staff stopped work and gathered in the newsroom, where they observed three minutes' silence in memory of the victims.

    CNA Director Themis Themistocleous sent, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff, a message of support and solidarity to the President and General Director of Spanish News Agency (EFE) Miguel Angel Gozalo.

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Thuesday and Wednesday: 16/03/2004 to 17/03/2004 -------------------- The weather will be fine. The winds will blow from a Southwesterly to Westerly direction 3 to 4bf. The sea will be slight. The temperatures will reach 17C inland, around 19C over the coast and aroun 9 C over the mountains.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 18/3/2004 to 19/3/2004 ------------------------------ The weather will be partly cloudy with a possibility of some isolated showers and thunderstorm on Friday. Temperatures will remain at the same levels.

    Top UN envoy believes enlarged talks ''unavoidable''

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special advisor on Cyprus, believes that enlarged talks with the participation of Greece and Turkey, in addition to the current participants of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, are inevitable to help move the peace process forward.

    Speaking after his first separate meeting with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, following three weeks of direct talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, de Soto said he hoped that this procedure would help solve pending issues the two leaders are discussing.

    The UN envoy said Sir Kieran Prendergast, UN Under Secretary for Political Affairs, arrives on the island tomorrow but his programme of work has not actually been discussed.
