    President flies to Athens for talks in view of New York meeting

    Nicosia, Feb 8 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos departs for Athens this afternoon for deliberations with the Greek leadership, in view of Tuesday's talks on the Cyprus problem in New York with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Yesterday, the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, authorised President Papadopoulos to select the members of the Council that would accompany him on his trip to New York, if he deemed this necessary.

    President expresses abhorrence over Moscow bomb attack

    Nicosia, Feb 8 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed sorrow and abhorrence over the bomb attack in the Moscow underground, and pointed out that the government remains steadfast in its support for the efforts of the government of the Russian Federation to preserve and safeguard the territorial integrity of the country and fully aligns itself with the international community's struggle against terrorism.

    President to hold talks in Athens before meeting UN chief

    Larnaca, Feb 8 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos departed for Athens today, where he will have deliberations with the Greek leadership, in view of a meeting in New York on Tuesday with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Speaking on his departure, the President said he would be going to New York with goodwill, aiming at resuming negotiations on the Cyprus problem on the basis of Annan's twice-revised solution plan and reaching a settlement by May 1.

    He added that he felt strengthened by the backing he is receiving from the Cypriot political leadership and the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, adding that the people of the island can rest assured that his top priority is to serve their interests.
