    European parliament speakers welcome efforts to resume Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- The 16th meeting of the President of the European Parliament with Parliament Presidents of the countries participating in the EU enlargement process has welcomed the current efforts to resume the UN negotiating process so that a reunited Cyprus joins the EU on 1 May 2004.

    Brussels, Feb 6 (CNA) -- EU Enlargement Commissioner Guenter Verheugen expressed here Friday his readiness to head a high-level EU team to New York next week to support the Cyprus negotiations.

    Speaking after a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul he called upon the parties in Cyprus to seize the opportunity offered, noting ''it would be very important if this common effort is successful''.

    ''In the 21st century Europe we can not have divided countries, barbed wires and landmines'', Verheugen told reporters.

    Church wants a fair deal to serve the interests of Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- The Holy Synod, the Church highest authority, believes that the reunification of Cyprus should, first and foremost, serve the interests of the people of Cyprus.

    The Synod stresses the need for a functional solution that would safeguard the human rights of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites, Latins.

    Brazil's new Ambassador presents credentials to President

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said the Greek Cypriot side aims to improve the Cyprus settlement plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for the benefit of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, stressing that he does not aspire to negotiate the Annan Plan in order to abandon it.

    The President was speaking during the presentation of the credentials of Brazil's new Ambassador to Cyprus, Sergio Eduardo Moreira Lima, who will be stationed in Tel Aviv.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said Cyprus is determined to redouble its efforts ''to overcome the division and restore the unity'' of the country.

    Accepting the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Jon Hui Jong, who will be stationed in Cairo, President Papadopoulos expressed appreciation to Korea for its invaluable support for the implementation of the UN Resolutions on the problem of Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed here Friday that the Cyprus problem is not a religious related conflict and called on the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which is chaired by Malaysia, to adopt resolutions which reflect UN resolutions.
