    Cyprus House plenary passes Euroelections Law

    Nicosia, Jan 30 (CNA) -- The Cyprus parliament passed Thursday night a landmark bill for the European elections in June paving the way for Greek and Turkish Cypriots to vote on a single electoral roll for the representatives of the Cyprus Republic to the Eyropean Parliament.

    Interior Minister Andreas Christou hailed the historic step taking place on the eve of Cyprus' full accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004 and called upon the Turkish Cypriots ''to prepare, submit their applications and participate with us, Greek Cypriot compatriots, in this important political step.''

    Brussels, Jan 30 (CNA) -- European Commission President Romano Prodi has said there is a small but good window of opportunity to solve the Cyprus problem by 1 May 2004, noting the Commission's readiness to offer towards this direction.

    Asked after his meeting with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, today in Brusssels, whether the issue of the Cyprus EU Commissioner was discussed Prodi said: ''we discussed it frankly and friendly and in very few days we shall take a common decision''.

    Annan to contact parties before deciding on Cyprus talks

    Brussels, Jan 30 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today he would first contact all interested parties on the Cyprus problem and then would be in a better position to announce whether or not the conditions for the resumption of the talks are fulfilled, as well as when the talks can take place and where.

    Annan had a telephone conversation on Thursday night with US Secretary of State Colin Powell, with whom he discussed the latest developments on Cyprus.

    Papadopoulos says Annan still undecided over Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, Jan 30 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General has not yet decided whether or not to resume talks on Cyprus because he considers that he has not received the assurances which justify the conditions he has set to re-engage in a new round of negotiations, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has said here Friday.

    The President made the statement upon his return from a visit first to Strasbourg, during which he addressed the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and then to Brussels, where he met UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and European Commission President Romano Prodi.
