    Greek-American leaders meet US officials on Cyprus

    Washington, Jan 22 (CNA) -- Greek-American leaders had meetings here yesterday with US officials at the White House and the State Department focusing on efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Headed by World Council of Hellenes (SAE) President Andrew Athens, the delegation met with Undersecretary of State for political affairs Marc Grossman and Deputy National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley.

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 23/01/2004 to 24/01/2004 -------------------- Unstable with showers or isolated thunderstorms and snow over mountains. Winds will be fresh to near gale at times. State of sea very rough locally high.

    Maximum temperature: Around 10 C inland and around 13 C over coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature: Around 4 C inland and around 7 C over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 25/01/2004 to 26/01/2004 ------------------------------ No significant change. Small increas in temperature is expected.

    Papandreou says dynamic in Cyprus must be utilised

    London, Jan 22 (CNA) - Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou said today that it is important to utilise the new dynamic that has been created in the Cyprus problem, especially after Cyprus' accession to the EU, noting that all sides must show the necessary political will, especially the Turkish side.

    Speaking after a short meeting in London with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Papandreou said they discussed developments in the Cyprus problem, especially after the recent visit of Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos to Athens.

    Eorsi says Turkish Cypriots less concerned with island's future

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA) - Hungarian Rapporteur to the Parliamentary Committee of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the situation in Cyprus, Matyas Eorsi, has said that during his recent visit to Cyprus he got the impression that the political leaders in the Turkish occupied areas of the island were more concerned with problems of the past than with the future of the country.

    In an interview published on PACE's website, Eorsi notes that ''Ankara holds the key to solving the problem, as the Turks are in a position to exert pressure on the northern Cypriot leaders''.

    London, Jan 22 (CNA) -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said today that all sides concerned, want a settlement of the Cyprus problem, before the island officially joins the EU, on 1st May 2004, adding that it is important under what terms the settlement should take place.

    ''Everybody wants a settlement before May 1st, the question is under what terms that settlement should take place. Our role and duty is to assist the direct parties to come to a settlement. Straw said after a working lunch in London with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou.
