    Greek main opposition leader arrives

    Larnaca, Jan 20 (CNA) -- ''The Greek people cares for Cyprus more than ever'', said Greek main opposition leader, New Democracy Party President Costas Karamanlis, who arrived here today at the invitation of Cyprus' rightwing party Democratic Rally (DISY).

    Speaking on his arrival Karamanlis said that in view of Cyprus' full accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004, there is a new dynamic in the question of Cyprus, noting that his party has always supported the efforts of the Cyprus governments towards a settlement.

    Cyprus and Georgian Presidents to address the Parliamentary Assembly of CoE

    Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Georgian President Mikhali Saakashvili will address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during its winter session in Strasbourg.

    According to a CoE press release parliamentarians are due to debate the situations in both countries. Their agenda also includes debates on the consequences of EU enlargement, euthanasia, public service broadcasting, the functioning of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan, and Armenia's honouring of its obligations and commitments.

    EESC President to visit Cyprus in February

    Brussels, Jan 20 (CNA) - President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Roger Briesch will be in Cyprus on February 11 on an official visit, as part of a tour of the ten future EU member states in view of EU enlargement.

    On May 1st, when Cyprus officially becomes a full member of the EU, the EESC will welcome six Cypriot members.

    Foreign Minister: time running short for solution by May 1

    Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou believes that time is running out for a solution in Cyprus before the country accedes to the European Union on May 1 this year.

    Speaking at a lunch, hosted by CNA for foreign correspondents, the Minister also said that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will decide on future strategy once he has before him all information, following various meetings between Turkey's premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and himself, Erdogan and US President George Bush and a crucial meeting of Turkey's powerful National Security Council.

    Greek opposition leader pledges to work for a Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Costas Karamanlis, leader of the main opposition party New Democracy in Greece, has pledged to do all he can to fulfill the next national goal, a fair and lasting political settlement.

    He said that having successfully concluded the first objective (accession to the European Union) everybody has to behave in a responsible manner and said national issues should be left outside the electoral campaign in Greece (general elections take place on March 7).

    Irish FM hopes for progress in Cyprus issue

    Brussels, Jan 20 (CNA) - Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairman of the EU Council of Ministers Brian Cowen expressed today hope that there would be progress in the direction of reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Cowen was speaking before the European Parliament Committee of Foreign Affairs, where he presented the Irish presidency's priorities in the field of external relations.
