Foreign Minister sees no change in Annan's positions

Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) -- It is highly unlikely for the UN Secretary General to change his positions on the question of Cyprus as he anticipates the Turkish side to clarify its own views, Foreign Minister Giorgos Iakovou has said.

The minister also said that the position of the Greek Cypriot side is not affected by the conflicting statements coming from the Turkish and the Turkish Cypriot sides and reiterated President Tassos Papadopoulos' readiness to return to the negotiating table to negotiate on the basis of a peace proposal put forward by Kofi Annan.

Luxembourg Premier to pay official visit to Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) -- The Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean Claude Juncker will pay a three-day official visit to Cyprus in late January.

''The Prime Minister will be here from 25-27 of January,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides announced here today.

Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here today that he does not intend to reply to a letter UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has sent him, in response to his letter of December 17 asking Annan to invite the two sides in Cyprus to peace talks.

Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) --- European Union Commissioners Neil Kinnock and Frits Bolkestein will visit Cyprus next month.

CNA has also learned that President of the European Economic and Social Committee Roger Briesch, will also visit the island February 10 and 11.

Brussels, Jan 13 (CNA) - US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston said today that a solution to the Cyprus problem was possible by May 1st, noting that a settlement would act as a catalyst for Turkey's accession to the EU.
