    by Kyriakos Tsioupras

London, Jan 9 (CNA) -- British government believes that the result of the so-called elections in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus (14 December 2003) has shown the wish of the Turkish Cypriots to solve the Cyprus issue and accede to the EU and that this desire should be fully respected.

Invited by Lord Kilclooney to assess the recent ''election'' results in occupied Cyprus, Baroness Symons, on behalf of the British government, expressed hope that ''a new administration will be in place as soon as possible to allow Turkish Cypriots to grasp the opportunity available to reach a settlement to the Cyprus problem before May 2004'', when the island will officially join the EU.

Nicosia, Jan 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos assured once again of the Greek Cypriot side's readiness for substantial negotiations on the basis of the Annan plan aiming for a more functional and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, which will lead to the collapse of the wall of division, so that a reunited Cyprus accedes to the EU on May 1, 2004.

Speaking yesterday at an official dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Estonia Arnold Ruutel, who is paying a state visit to Cyprus, Papadopoulos also said that within the European family, Cyprus and Estonia can cooperate more closely for the promotion of their bilateral relations as well as on their common targets and interests as small member states of the EU.

In his speech Ruutel said that from this year on, the Estonian-Cypriot relations will be deepened and expanded still more, "for we certainly have many common interests, aspirations and positions."
