    US: Turkish Cypriot vote advances peace in Cyprus

    Washington, Dec 16 (CNA) -- The US has welcomed the outcome of Sunday's poll in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus, saying it advances the cause of peace.

    US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher also said that the Turkish Cypriots have expressed their wish for a political settlement that will allow them to join the European Union with Greek Cypriots.

    Boucher was commenting on Sunday's poll in northern occupied Cyprus that gave over 50 per cent of the vote to those forces that advocate a solution and accession to the EU.

    Cyprus most favourable towards common EU defence and foreign policy

    Brussels, Dec 16 (CNA) -- Cypriots are strong supporters of a common foreign policy and defence policy in Europe, according to an opinion poll the European Union's statistics services Eurostat has conducted among the ten acceding countries and the three candidate countries.

    According to the survey, 87 per cent of Cypriots questioned support a common defence policy and 81 per cent back a common foreign policy.

    Cyprus has the highest percentages among all 13 countries that participated in the poll. In Turkey, support for a common defence policy reaches 58 per cent and for foreign policy 57 per cent.

    CoE Secretary-General says no time should be lost for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Walter Schwimmer said the elections in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus clearly show the support of the Turkish Cypriots for achieving a Cyprus settlement before Cyprus joints the EU in May 2004 and said there is no time to be lost.
