President: EU call on Turkey an important policy statement

Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- President Tassos Papadopoulos has described a call by the European Union to Turkey ''an important policy statement'' which should have a positive fallout on the efforts to find a negotiated settlement.

He also said that the EU has always maintained that it will not substitute the UN in its peace attempts to solve the question of Cyprus and said he believes that any pressure from Europe on Ankara should be related to the start of accession negotiations.
