    Brussels, Oct 17 (CNA) -- EU Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said he highly appreciates Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos' statement that Cyprus would not veto Turkey's EU accession course when Cyprus becomes a member of the European Union next May.

    Verheugen was speaking after meeting here today Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who on his part said Turkey's efforts aim at a mutual solution to the Cyprus problem and that ''our goal is not to create an insolvability on Cyprus.''

    Key official interest rates remain unchanged

    Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) -- The key official interest rates of the Central Bank of Cyprus, that is the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility, remain unchanged at 4,50% and 2,50% respectively.

    This was decided here today by the Monetary Policy Committee, which met today under Central Bank of Cyprus Governor Christodoulow Christodoulou.

    Simitis predicts increased pressure on Turkey

    Brussels, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis believes that Ankara will come under mounting pressure, if the situation in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus does not change after the December ''parliamentary elections'' there.

    Invited to comment on remarks by his Turkish counterpart that he does not want the question of Cyprus to remain unresolved, Simitis said that the stance Greece and the European Union have adopted has made it clear to Turkey that there must be a political settlement in Cyprus.

    President appears cautious about Erdogan's remarks

    Brussels, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that statements by Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on a UN peace proposal on Cyprus should not be considered a ''new opening or a fundamental change of policy'' on the part of Ankara.

    Speaking at a press conference at the end of the European Council in Brussels, President Papadopoulos expressed satisfaction with its conclusions.
