Cyprus - The Netherlands hold officials talks

Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, heading their respective multi-party delegations, hold here this morning official talks, as Belkenende concludes his two-day official visit to Cyprus.

Addressing his guest at last night's state banquet, Papadopoulos reiterated his firm desire to resume peace talks with a view at finding a negotiated settlement before Cyprus joins the European Union in May next year.

''The search for a negotiated settlement of the question of Cyprus based on the plan submitted by the UN Secretary General remains the first priority of my government. A viable and lasting solution can and should be achieved before the 1st of May. If this is not possible because of the continued and well-documented intransigence of one side, we will redouble our efforts with tenacity and perseverance,'' the Cypriot President said.
