Resolution 550 of 1984 said it considers any attempt to ''settle any part of Varosha (Famagusta) by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN.'' Speaking after a meeting with Greek Minister of National Defence Yiannos Papantoniou, Christofias said that ''the UN should and cannot'' accept Denktash's proposal for joint administration of Varosha. He said Famagusta can only be handed back to its inhabitants in accordance with resolution 550, which provides for the transfer of the area's administration to the UN and the return of its legitimate inhabitants. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the islands territory.
