Greek and Cypriot Defence Ministers hold talks in Athens

    by Costas Stavrinos

Athens, Jul 9 (CNA) - Greek Minister of Defence Yiannos Papantoniou said today his country ''guarantees the safety of Cyprus and there is nothing on the international horizon that can change or alter Greece's position''. He added that ''Greece is taking all necessary measures to establish the security of the Republic of Cyprus''.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Cypriot Minister of Defence Kyriacos Mavronicolas, Papantoniou said their talks focused on issues joining the two countries regarding defence and the Cyprus problem, noting that they determined ''the insistence of Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on their intransigent positions, which have led to a deadlock in negotiations to reach a settlement''.

Mavronicolas said Greece has been contributing for decades to the substantive defence of the Republic of Cyprus and the existence of a National Guard, which is the defensive power of the island against Turkish occupation troops.

He assured that as long as the Turkish side does not get the messages of the times, the National Guard would continue to be strengthened with the help of Greece.
