    Human Rights Commissioner begins contacts

    Nicosia, Jun 26 (CNA) Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Alvaro Gil Robles said that his conclusions on his visit to Cyprus would be included in a report, which will be ready early September and submitted to the Parliamentary Assembly and the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

    He said the conclusions would note the extent to which human rights are implemented by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus.

    Government says Guls statements mean nothing

    Nicosia, Jun 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said a statement by Turkeys Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul that the Cyprus problem can be solved by the end of this summer means nothing.

    I do not know what Mr. Gul knows and why he is making these kind of statements. The Turkish and Turkish Cypriot side have withdrawn from the dialogue procedure at The Hague and after. I cannot understand where he bases his prediction for a solution before the end of thuis summer, the Spokesman noted.

    Nicosia, June 26 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday 27/06/2003 to 28/06/2003 -------------------- Fine and clear. Winds will be southwesterly to westerly light to moderate and the state of sea slight but locally up to moderate in the afternoon.

    Maximum temperature: 38 C inland, around 33 C over south coastal areas and 30 C over west coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature: 23 C inland, around 21 C over south coastal areas and 19 C over west coastal areas.

    Nicosia, Jun 26 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou emphasised during his meeting here Thursday with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Alvaro Gil Robles that reference should always be made to the violation of human rights in Cyprus because of the Turkish invasion of 1974.

    Maurer: Harmonization ''a task of Hercules'', but EU report positive

    Nicosia Jun 26 (CNA) --- The comprehensive monitoring report for Cyprus will be positive as long as the House of Representatives adopts all harmonization bills by beginning of September, European Union chief negotiator with Cyprus Leopold Maurer said here today.

    ''I am sure that if everything promised during our mission will be delivered, Cyprus will be again in the first place of new member states and the comprehensive monitoring report will be a very good one'', Maurer said during a press conference after concluding here a visit heading a multi-member delegation of the EU Commission.

    Main aspects still pending are environment, telecommunications, energy, agriculture and rural development.

    ''The report will be a good one. It will depend on how good the laws are prepared and on how quick the House adopts them. There are many laws it is a huge task and I compare it with the task of Hercules'', EU official said.
