    Nicosia, Jun 12 (CNA) -- President of the Security Council, Russias Permanent Representative to the UN Sergey Lavrov said yesterday in New York that all Council members support the UN Secretary Generals plan for a solution to the Cyprus problem, pointing out that Annan's proposal is the best solution to the problem.

    Nicosia, June 12 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday 13/06/2003 to 14/06/2003 -------------------- Fine and mostly clear. Winds will be westerly to southwesterly light to moderate and the state of sea slight but locally up to moderate, in the afternoon.

    Turkey has an historic responsibility to press Denktash

    London, Jun 12 (CNA) -- British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane said that Turkey's government, parliament and military have an historic responsibility to exert pressure on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to reach an agreement in the context of the UN Secretary General's proposals on a comprehensive political settlement and thereby allow a united Cyprus to enter the European Union.

    Answering questions at the House of Commons, MacShane noted that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw will meet shortly here with the Turkish Foreign Minister ''and will continue to press all parties - particularly the Turkish government, Parliament and the military - to accept their responsibilities.''

    US to keep pushing for a just and durable Cyprus settlement

    Washington, Jun 12 (CNA) - The US is going to keep pushing for a just and durable Cyprus settlement on the basis of the Annan plan, one that allows all Cypriots to live in peace and enjoy the benefits of EU membership, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman said at the 14th annual PSEKA conference.

    Grossman expressed hope that a unified Cyprus will enter the European Union in May 2004, noting that ''the signatures on April 16th, 2003 of the EU Accession Treaty are a great accomplishment for the people of Cyprus, for Greek Americans, for people who may be interested in this subject, for Greece and for the United States of America.''

    Cyprus condemns violence between Israel and Palestinians

    Nicosia, Jun 12 (CNA) - The government of the Republic of Cyprus ''condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent resurgence of violence between Israel and the Palestinians which resulted in great loss of life on both sides and the serious injury of many more''.

    In a statement, the government notes that ''acts of terror and the indiscriminate use of force lead to a new cycle of violence'', hopes to see ''a new climate of reconciliation and cooperation in the area'' and calls on all sides ''to show maximum restraint''.
